    Baba Didi and the Godwits Fly {Book Review}

    October 18th, 2013

I recently received a children’s book that was recently published called Baba Didi and the Godwits Fly. It is a story of the birds called godwits that migrate after the summer is over to the south. It also the story of Baba Didi, or grandmother’s emigration from Croatia to New Zealand.

I thought it was a wonderful story to intertwine because it talks and illustrates the travels that both go through.

Now, you might be asking how my almost 2-year-old might understood this book. Well, she is not old enough obviously but she loved the illustrations and the colors on each page. I tried to give a brief description of each page, but in reality we worked on reading this book over several days.

Even though we love traveling with our little ones, trying to relay the “traveling” that birds and people do over different countries is a different story. This book is definitely geared to older kids and is a lovely story for adults to read as well.

I love the information I learned on the author, illustrator and the person who wrote the foreword too! Here is a little about them.

Nicola Muir is a teacher, writer, and regular columnist for New Zealand newspaper the Northern Advocate.

Annie Hayward is an abstract and figurative painter. She exhibits widely and has been commissioned for many paintings in New Zealand and internationally.

Helen Clark is the former prime minister of New Zealand and is now head of the United Nations Development Programme

Check out a little more information about the book and save it on your Goodreads!

Grilled Chicken Thighs with Basil Garlic Vinaigrette

    October 16th, 2013

We just finished having my friend from Texas stay with us for a few days. I love her a lot! This is a friend who has been able to visit me since I have moved away from Texas. She has seen the changes in our family from a couple to a family of four.

She is also a blessing in my life. Do you have a friend who speaks the truth over you? She encourages me with words from the Bible and does not beat around the bush. She prays for me and with me and with no judgment. She listens to my every struggle and fear and comes back with a verse from the Bible.

    Wow.

Even though she has been to visit me often I felt even more BLESSED this time around. It was wonderful to have another girl around to share and to listen and not to mention, another helping hand with the kids! 🙂

Julianne is learning names so right off she said it but decided to call her “Honey, ” which was a highlight. I loved also that my friend had no fear to help me with teaching Julianne obedience too!

One of my love languages is hospitality and this comes with cooking, baking and making sure everyone is happy. When it comes to this, my friend is easy to please. I have to actually remind her to eat, which would be a nice reminder for me too. Even though I was not able to cook any real fancy foods or my typical meals I know that I was happy to have her with me and have a time to go to the movie theater with her.

This main meal has been a long time a coming. That is how it is said right? My husband finishes eating and says, “It has been a while we have had one of your delicious meals.” While this statement made me feel happy it also meant we were not eating out or eating leftovers.
I love simple meals like this especially if a part of it is prepared by my hubby. He came home from work to put these thighs on the grill outside.

The lovely thing about this recipe is that it is SUPER simple. As the chicken thighs are grilling, a vinaigrette is prepared, cooked brown rice is prepped, and a simple salad is shredded. This will definitely be a keeper!

I will be sharing the Israeli salad recipe next week with a cookbook review so stay tuned cause it is a perfect combination for this meal.

      Please Touch Museum with an Active Toddler {Review}

      October 11th, 2013
I was provided tickets to check out the museum at no expense. All opinions are my own.

have officially visited the Please Touch Museum TWICE in the last 2 months and with a different experience each time. If you did not know I have an almost 2-year old toddler and an almost 8-month old baby. I am and have never been someone to just stay home ALL day. I like being active, despite still not being able to lose my pregnancy weight. Nothing stops me but some things are little more challenging than others like going to the Please Touch Museum.

This museum is exclusively for kids to touch everything and experience everything around them so it means I have to stay behind them constantly. The first I went I went with a friend and her 16-month old. She had chosen to take her stroller in while I did not. I carried Kathleen in my Ergo carrier but that got really tiring for both of us. She wanted to see what was going on. Luckily, my friend offered the stroller seat to her so that became a break. I could have gone back to the car to get mine but we were deep in the museum already.

What else became an issue? Julianne was just so excited that she would run off (real fast) ahead of me and I would lose sight of her. Thankfully the museum has personnel to help with this issue. LOL. Someone promptly brought her back to me and we talked about not going ahead of mommy. That did not last long. By the end of a few hours we decided to leave cause nap time was hitting hard so we ended up not finishing the museum.

Fast forward several weeks later where my husband has fall break. We decide to go on a Tuesday and arrive around 10am. We started on the section that we had not finished but I needed to remind myself and my husband that this was a time where it was not necessary to rush my toddler. It was her time to explore and discover.

I was SO glad to have my husband with me because a baby requires attention and my husband was able to help with Julianne while I tended to Kathleen’s needs. I did set her down in the smaller age sections to interact and she loved looking around. She especially enjoyed looking at the carousel too!

The carousel was lots of fun for Julianne. She got to choose her own horse and ride on her own. She was beaming! If she had it her way, she would have stayed there the whole day.

The building itself is gorgeous and as you can see we took lots of pictures outside with the two girls. It was a nice day too! There is something about old buildings that makes everything so great. Take a chance and go and visit the museum. Try going with other moms that can help each other out or go with your older kids.

Allstate Purple Purse: Pass It On Project

      October 9th, 2013
This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Latina Bloggers Connect and The Allstate Foundation.

I personally like working for a cause other than my primary cause in life: to exhibit the love of Christ. I really enjoy spending time getting to know people even though my life continues to get busier and busier. I still crave a good talk with a friend or group of ladies.

In getting to know people you realize there is more to them than they share. Sometimes, they give you a peek into their private and personal lives, but sometimes the door remains closed and other times the dam breaks and someone opens up.

As many as you know, October is not only Breast Cancer Awareness month but it is also Domestic Violence Awareness month and as part of that, Purple Purse, The Allstate Foundation’s symbol for domestic violence, proudly represents a woman’s way to escape the cycle of abuse by gaining financial independence.  Now in its third year, The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse campaign has pledged to donate up to $350,000 to the YWCA for programs designed at assisting survivors of domestic violence and other women in need.

Sad to say I have known several people in my life that have gone through this and as someone who personally lived through it, here are a few facts you might not know:

      • Domestic violence is an issue that impacts millions, but few talk about it. Purple Purse helps people carry on conversations and pass information about domestic violence and financial abuse by placing the power directly into people’s hands with a purple purse.
      • Domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime – that’s more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined.
      • A majority of Americans agree that domestic violence is tough to talk about. More than one-third of Americans have never discussed the issue with family or friends and Purple Purse provides a conversation starter.
      • Lacking financial knowledge and resources is the number one indicator of whether a domestic violence victim will stay, leave or return to an abusive relationship.

Purple Purse, now in its third year, helps people carry on conversations and pass along information about domestic violence and financial abuse by placing the power directly into people’s hands with a purple purse.
        • As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Allstate Foundation is sending more than 1,000 purses carrying domestic violence information throughout the country. The purses will be passed between co-workers, friends, and family, sparking important conversations along the way.
        • For every purple purse passed through the end of October, The Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to YWCA. We’ll give up to $350,000 for programs aimed to help domestic violence survivors and stop the cycle of abuse.
        • If you don’t get your hands on one of the purple purses that are being passed around the country, you can still help by logging onto Facebook.com/PurplePurse and sharing a virtual purple purse. Each time a virtual purple purse is shared or re-shared, we’ll make a $5 donation to YWCA.
For every purple purse passed through the end of October, The Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to YWCA. We’ll give up to $350,000 for programs aimed to help domestic violence survivors and stop the cycle of abuse.
      • Be on the look-out! I might be handing YOU the purse next. Inform your friends, neighbors, family about this.

Visit Facebook or PurplePurse.com for more information.

Secret Recipe Club: Simple Chicken Pesto Pasta

      October 7th, 2013
One of the most simple meals to make that clearly tastes gourmet is pesto, in my opinion. You can make a large batch and keep in the refrigerator and make multiple meals. So great, especially if you grow your own basil. I love the simple recipe Lesa posted for Traditional Basil Pesto. I see so many recipes using walnuts or pecans but I believe my favorite is the pesto using pine nuts. It is a unique flavor and very Italian so why not use it? Trader Joe’s always has a great price on their pine nuts.

Edesia’s Notebook has a HUGE selection of recipes. I love that she has them documented really well. Lesa and I have similar lives. We are both moms to two girls even though her girls are older than mine so she really also focuses on making simple yet delicious recipes for her family.

I added grilled chicken, chopped tomato and used rotini pasta to make this a complete meal. How about a salad? Thanks to Lesa for a great simple recipe. 🙂  Check out her delicious recipe index for more recipes.
