Family Friendly Holiday Stay at The Inn at Pocono Manor
November 30th, 2016When we start planning for small getaways with our family we always look for a place that is family friendly. Family friendly holiday stays are becoming more enjoyable each year so I am glad to know that after 5 years of living in Philadelphia suburbs that there is so much to see in the state itself. The Pocono Mountains are always a place that friends talk about especially by those who do not care much for the beach even during the summer season. This past weekend we had the pleasure of staying at The Inn at Pocono Manor. Read below how we enjoyed our stay.
Thanksgiving Surprise
When we found out that we were heading out-of-town the day after Thanksgiving, I was really debating cooking for Thanksgiving because it did not sound restful. Since our families live too far away (Texas!) to see regularly at Thanksgiving, my husband and I extended an invitation to a family in the area whose family is even farther away…Washington! It ended being a nice evening of delicious food coupled with energetic toddlers and a teething baby.
The evening ended with us telling our girls that they needed to be ready for our adventure close to 2 hours away. We had told them about going to a hotel up in the mountains a few days prior and they were SO excited. Our girls LOVE staying overnight at hotels so when they find out we are going anywhere, they cannot stop talking about it.

The Inn at Pocono Manor
After a two-hour drive with three toddlers in our back seat, we were happy to see a lovely place nestled in the mountains. The invitation to stay was attractive as we drove into the property. We could not wait to discover what waited for us especially since we arrived 2 hours early before check-in time. We were allowed to pre-check and enjoy the grounds while our room process was completed. The Inn at Pocono Manor is definitely beautifully kept especially since it was opened in 1902. Every space was already decorated with Christmas decorations and ready for anyone to pose or take pictures for the holidays.
Despite the amount of people who were checking in that afternoon, we meandered through each floor from the lobby to the lower level where the game room and home theater were located. The home theater was nice and spacious and was paired with the game room. There was a sitting area with nice leather chairs and a non-active bar but it was a nice space for card-playing or lounging.
Amenities
Our room was definitely spacious for a two-bed non-suite room. We had two double beds with a pack ‘n play included and a nice large bathroom. Although our view was not of the mountains, we could see the front of the resort along with the fire pit. We all had two great nights of comfortable sleep even with three toddler girls. After having no naps during the day, our girls were tired and ready to rest.
While the resort is an 114-year old resort, take in mind that the structure is built differently. Our room had a connecting door and even though it was a busy weekend, we were able to hear lots of movement from other families moving to and fro especially late at night. If you are a light sleeper, this might pose a problem, but nothing a glass of wine cannot take of.
There was a pool available to us but we did not take advantage of that amenity. There were two active restaurants on property one called The Exchange that offers more upscale menu options and setting and a bar restaurant that offers music on the weekend evenings and a standard menu ranging from sandwiches and pizza to simpler main course dishes. I was able to enjoy the music one evening with a delicious IPA.
Meals at the Inn
We dined at The Exchange on both evenings during our stay. We chose earlier times to dine because we have younger kids. We were given a nice big round table to spread out and ordered our meals. The Exchange is a restaurant that definitely paces itself so if you are going with kids, you either want to let them know you want the service to be faster because we arrived at 5:45pm one evening and left around 7:30pm.
The menu was extensive offering appetizers, salads to start with main dishes including steak, lamb, fish, and chicken. Every evening the waiter would tell us the soup and vegetable of the day. Our first meal was not as enjoyable as the second evening but that might have been because we asked for our service to rushed a bit. The restaurant also offered a nice wine list to go with the meal.
Our service the next evening was definitely paced a lot better so that we could have our girls enjoy their dinner while we enjoyed our. The meals are pricier than the bar restaurant but the portions are generous ranging from seafood, meat and chicken options. On one evening we had the girls split a pasta dish but then by the second night they girls had fun children’s meals with delicious crispy chicken fingers. I think our experience might have been better at the bar restaurant but here’s to next time!
The breakfast was held in the Mountain View Room which was set up so nicely. It looked like a ballroom but it had tables everywhere and a center area with a buffet-style breakfast with an omelette station at the end. The views of the mountains were very nice as well! Our breakfast options were numerous and ideal for those people who like simple cereal and fruit for breakfast down to the heartier breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, sausage and biscuits with gravy. We definitely had a filling breakfast because it allowed us to have energy for the activities planned for the day.
Family Friendly Holiday Stay and Activities
We definitely wanted to take advantage of everything available at the resort so when we found out there were two trails available from the inn, we decided to take the moderate trail with our girls. It was a perfect morning for a nice walk with our coats and boots ready for our adventure.
Both trails lead to the waterfalls so the moderate trail was super easy until we reached the decline toward the falls. During the fall and wet season it could be slippery but otherwise we survived as a family of five. The rain caught us on the way but halfway through I called the resort’s shuttle service to pick us up. Two hours later we enjoyed our afternoon by the fire at the lobby with hot chocolate. What a great way to enjoy my two toddlers after an adventure in the woods.
Magical Fireside Christmas
One experience I knew my girls would love was the Magical Fireside Christmas. My girls love everything about the season so we were excited to visit one of the lodges that was decked out all the way. As we entered the lodge there was a fire lighted and a nicely decorated Christmas tree on our right. To our left was a train display and a sitting area to welcome Santa. In the middle area were tables set up for families to sit while kids could decorate Christmas cookies. There was a bar available for the adults to enjoy their beverages in addition to a hot cocoa bar for those not imbibing. Behind the fire was another area with Christmas movies playing with a life-size bear to hug.
As we moved to the second floor, a huge gingerbread house was decorated with all kinds of candy. As we walked around the room there was a variety of crafting stations available for the kids. My girls had a great time making necklaces and crafts! They also had a chance to write a letter to Santa.
On both evenings we had a chance to schedule the resort’s Elf Turndown Service complete with milk and cookies as well as a jolly holiday story read by one of Santa’s helpers.The girls were SO excited especially since they got milk and cookies before going to bed. That certainly was a treat!
This experience is open to the public and is $10 per person to enjoy what I described above with the exception of the bar and hot cocoa bar station are additional as well as additional snacks available on the second floor. It is available until December 25th and is a great place for family photos and even for a nice getaway.
Family Getaway
If you have a chance to get away, consider visiting the Pocono Mountains by making a visit to this spacious, historical site. When A Mom Gets to Read
Hey guys! I read a book! I mean it was not any kind of book but one where I learned about someone. Truth be told, I am in the middle of 4 books and some day I will finish all of them but this particular book I read in one night because well, it was made of a lot of photos.
I have to admit that I do not talk much about opera especially with the title of my blog. While I love listening to opera and watching videos, I really have not been able to perform. Several months ago I had the pleasure of singing in a private concert for a gentleman’s 80th birthday. It was something I enjoyed immensely and see myself doing more often.
Maria Callas
Maria Callas is one of my favorite opera singers and one that I have been intrigued with for a long time. She has always reminded me of my Chilean grandmother with her sense of style and elegance but then Ms. Callas was also full of passion and beauty. After getting a view into her letters, I really got a sense of the life she led and how intense she really was.
It was her passion for life and her passion for music that made her a big star. It was very convicting to see and read how intensely she worked on her art that made her the great star she was but it does not mean she had a happy life. In The Definitive Maria Callas: The Life of a Diva in Unseen Pictures the book shares another depth to her life through never-before seen letters written to her husband / manager in addition to photos that had to be restored in order to share in this amazing book.
A Perfect Book for your Coffee Table
Working closely with the Fondaziono Proge Marzotto, the Italian arts trust who acquired the archive of Maria Callas in 2013, and Karl van Zoggel, head of the International Maria Callas Club, ROADS is delighted to present this amazing visual biography.
The photos in this book are amazing, mixed with black and white and colored photos. There is a nice balance between real life photos and photos of her in her home and in costume. It reminds me of the season of life I got to wear costumes while performing in Houston. It’s definitely from another world and it quickly transported me. There are also several recipes in her own handwriting that are shared in this book! So exciting!
Consider giving this book to those loved ones who love opera or even are a fan of Maria Callas. It is an amazing and magical book. It is available online and in fine bookstores.

A Crayola Birthday Experience
November 10th, 2016A birthday experience was complete with a visit to Crayola Experience with our oldest daughter. What great memories we made and hopefully you can create the same memories.
Time flies
My oldest daughter turned 5 this past and I simply cannot believe how quickly time has gone by. It was just yesterday that we moved into our townhouse in the Philly suburbs. I was 6 months pregnant with my middle daughter and my oldest was just around 10 months old. It actually makes me tear up because I miss that baby stage now that I see my youngest turning into a real toddler.
This year we decided not to do a birthday party but decided to give our daughter an experience. While she expected the party, we did not tell her our plans until the week of her birthday. She was not immensely disappointed but instead when she heard that her birthday was going to be spread among a few days, she was elated. Who would not be?
Festivities at Home
Since our daughter’s birthday fell in the middle of the week, we opened her gifts that day and I made her a nice full breakfast. She pretty much had a great day because she had her birthday gifts opened and she was the line leader at her school which also meant she was in charge of bringing a snack. I cam in to read her favorite book to the class instead of having sweets since there are so many allergies in her class. It was great!
On Friday I prepared a special cake that she had requested made with mangoes. Even though it was out of season, I was able to work around this using frozen mango and mango products from the local Indian market. She simply loved the cake so that made the evening great.
Easton, Pa
Our daughter totally was excited to visit Crayola Experience for the first time with only mommy and her middle sister. My husband stayed home with our 15-month old so that we could have a smoother time. I am glad we did because it was a packed day! After driving an hour and a half to Easton, Pa, we arrived to horrific traffic. Why was there horrible traffic you may ask?
In addition to our planned activity there was also a BACON FEST happening in town! It took about 15 to 20 minutes to get into the town and then another 10 minutes to find parking. I think we only found parking because some people leaving the market told us that we would do better using metered parking, so we waited for them to get out. PRIME location parking. We only had a 5 minute walk to Crayola Experience and we skipped on the crazy traffic trying to get to the parking garage.
Crayola Experience – Fourth floor
I had purchased our tickets beforehand so that we could get through the line. We each received plastic baggies with tokens and a map of what each floor offered. I decided we should start on the top floor so that we could work our way down to the bottom floor.
We arrived at noon even though my goal time was to arrive at 11am but it was fine. The top floor consisted of molding and projects with melted crayons. Before we left home, I made sure the girls did not have on nice clothes for this experience but somehow we got stuck with nice fleece jackets on. Whoops. I was trying not to freak out on unwanted melted crayon on anything.
I breathed in and relaxed. It was my daughter’s birthday and it was her day. I looked over and she was having a great time already. There were not any signs around letting us know what to do in the stations laid out. I then noticed that there were 3 staff members working a WHOLE floor for three stations. For a busy Saturday, I think it required more personnel. We finally figured out the melted wax station where kids made their own creations using different melted crayon liquid.
The girls then melted crayon and chose to make a mold of a ring. It was cool to see the process and then end up with a crayon ring. We all decided to switch when we each received our own mold.
Crayola Experience – Third Floor
This was probably the best floor for the girls. There was a large indoor play area in the middle of the room surrounded with multiple stations with different crafts. After 30 minutes of playing I coerced them to come out and join me in a craft. They each made a pretend magnifying glass that they made out of a paper plate. They used watercolors to decorate the ring and then dried it. They proceeded to tape and attach string to end up with a cool craft!
Birthday girl wanted to go back to the playground so I let her play for 10 minutes before I decided I really could not see her. There were a lot of people and I felt like she would feel lost trying to find me if she grew tired. We then chose to try Doodle in the Dark. They loved they glow in the dark aspects especially with the coloring. We then moved on the Create your Own Puzzle station. They LOVED this area. The great thing is that parents get to interact and participate. The girls each colored and created their own pictures and then they placed the paper in a cutting mill where it created a 6-piece or 12-piece puzzle. It was a smash.
Lunch
Since we arrived right at lunch time, I decided to feed them a snack to hold them over. Right at 2:15pm I decided to call a break, for my sake as well, and have lunch. I thought choosing a food truck outside the premises at the Bacon Fest would have been easy but it was not. The whole world seemed to be at the festival and it proved to be claustrophobic and not a great place for kids. We ended overspending at some indoor market which made me wish I had just packed our lunches. I later saw there was a corner cafe offering discounts for those at the Crayola Experience.
I think, if the Bacon Fest had not been in town, we would have had better luck eating somewhere fun but we will only know next time. After lunch, I added more money to the parking meter for another 3 hours and headed back to our amusement.
Crayola Experience – Second Floor
The second floor was lots of fun, with the girls making their own labels and choosing their crayon colors. They named their crayons and even thought of their little sister at home. It was so cute! The tokens we had in our bag were used for this room but no one explained where else these tokens COULD be used.
After that station we got to a creative computer section where the girls used screens to color or design their photos. After they finished they could email them to me or send it on big screen for them to find. It was LOTS of fun and the girls really loved using the screen to color. Since we do not use screens at home, places like this and the library to use computers to make their pictures.
The rest of the floor required either more tokens or purchase of products to create projects but before we left we came across a giant crayon for coloring pages and another station where there was a photobooth that created coloring pages of themselves posing with different scenery. It was hilarious and the girls could not wait to come home to color our faces.
Birthday Experience
I lean heavily on experiences that spending too much money for memories that will not last. The birthday girl loved the day and everything we did. We left with so many crafts, laughs and memories. We were there for FOUR hours and we probably could have stayed another hour. Despite running through the girls’ nap time, they still were energized, even though there were some tired legs.

Striving for Balance with Healthy Choices

Long weeks
Fall is quickly coming to an end and I am not happy about it. With the time change coming up and the busy weeks, the holidays could definitely be a time of respite. Balance seems like such a funny word in my vocabulary because it seems virtually impossible. I tell the truth because I have two toddlers in school and an active 15-month old at home and a list of chores, errands and exercise to balance. I simply am not a person who lets one category go because I want to focus on another is not how I do things.
At the moment, making sure that my family is healthy and eating right is my biggest goal with the next being a clean home. letting go of what cannot be done on certain weeks is necessary and is a work in progress. My biggest concern is making sure my health is in check so that I can keep going when others get sick.
How do I do this? 
Healthy Choices
One of the healthy choices I have made is making home cooked meals for my family. Even though I can be as busy as the next person, my goal is to make fresh meals that take me under 30 minutes to make and that are well-balanced. I also make sure that my kids drink enough fluids, wash their hands and get out of their school clothes when they get home. There are so many germs that simply come home and invade our home.
In addition to my kids getting their vitamins, I really try to take my own vitamins and supplements.
